THE race for the Zifa Southern Region Soccer League Golden Boot is heating up, with Hwange marksman Justine Kaunda continuing to lead the scoring charts after Week 17.
Kaunda has been in sensational form this season, netting 12 goals to establish a two-goal cushion over his closest challenger and teammate Morestuff Ncube, who has scored 10 times. Their prolific partnership has been one of the biggest reasons behind Hwange’s impressive campaign, with the coalminers boasting the league’s most feared attacking force.
In third place is Bulawayo Warriors striker Marshall Murambiwa, who has found the back of the net nine times, keeping himself firmly in contention for the coveted Golden Boot award as the season heads into its decisive stages.
The battle for fourth place is equally fascinating, with Bandile Moyo of Njube Spurs and Gabriel Rugoho of Talen Vision both tied on seven goals. The duo remain within touching distance of the leading trio and could quickly climb the standings with a strong run of form.
Victoria Falls Herentals forward Ian Mositafa occupies sixth place with six goals, while John Ngwenya (Bulawayo Warriors) and Tinotenda Chitete (Nkayi United) are level on five goals each.
A tightly packed group of players sits on four goals, highlighting the fierce competition throughout the league. They include Leo Phiri (Bosso90), Tatenda Ushe (Bulawayo City), Kudzai Muchada (Imbizo), Jephius Sibanda (Jordan), Clive Ncube (Megawatt), Tawanda Kaduwa (Talen Vision), Nabboth Tavarera (Victoria Falls Herentals) and Allan Tamburikayi (Zebra Revolution).
With several rounds of fixtures still to be played, the Golden Boot race remains wide open. While Kaunda has created some breathing space at the summit, a handful of in-form forwards are waiting to capitalise on any slip-up.
