VICTORIA Falls City Herentals claimed a morale-boosting point after fighting back to force a 1-1 draw against third placed Talen Vision in a Division 1 match played at Chinotimba Stadium in Victoria Falls on Saturday.
The result leaves Talen Vision sitting third on the Southern Region Division One log with 13 points from seven matches, while the home side remain 14th with just seven points.
The visitors stormed into an early lead inside three minutes.
A defensive lapse allowed Manered Gumbo to pounce and slot past Herentals’ goalkeeper Tendai Ndlovu, who would later produce heroics to keep his side in the contest.
Victoria Falls City Herentals grew into the game after the shock start.
Their persistence paid off when Brendon Nekatambe unleashed a stunning strike from outside the 18-yard box, leaving Talen Vision’s Prosper Matutu with no chance as the ball found the back of the net.
Ndlovu was named man of the match after a series of breathtaking saves, repeatedly denying former Highlanders forward Calvin Chigonero and the Talen Vision attack.
Victoria Falls City Herentals head coach Zibonele Ncube bemoaned another slow start and conceding early.
“Concerning today’s match, I’m sure we have the same problem of conceding early, first minute we failed to clear a simple ball and we ended up conceding and that’s our problem. All the matches we have played this season, we are conceding unnecessary goals. We have to go back to the drawing board, we have to improve on our defending because that’s our biggest area. From day one up to today, we are still conceding. We are scoring but we are conceding,” Ncube said.
Talen Vision coach Mkhuphali Masuku felt his side deserved more.
“I think we played well, especially when you play away from home and create some goal scoring opportunities and they don’t bury them. I don’t think the team that we played with, they wanted to win as much as we did, especially second half. But for us, we are happy with the result,” Masuku said.
Other Saturday results: Njube Spurs 0-3 Bulawayo City, Khami United 0-0 Zebra Revolution, Imbizo 0-3 Bosso90 (abandoned, awarded to Bosso90).
Hwange FC lead the table with 14 points, ahead of Bulawayo Warriors on goal difference.
